Mountaineering in the Andes mountain range

Limite Mountain Range

For those who want to try mountaineering and explore part of the Boundary Mountains, you can climb Cerro Titan (winter only) or Mirador del Tolosa (year-round), both over 4,100 meters high. You can reach the summit without requiring specific climbing or high-altitude training, and only needing a good level of physical fitness. From the summit, you have a wonderful view of the mountain range with the dominant image of Aconcagua (6,962 meters).

This trek and climb can be done year-round. Going into the mountains in winter requires extra knowledge of this type of terrain, and that's what we'll do in this workshop. Using high-altitude equipment, double boots, crampons, a helmet, and an ice axe, we'll explore the basic techniques for moving safely on snowy terrain.

Day 1: Mendoza / Las Cuevas

At 9:00 a.m., we will meet at the YPF meeting and end point of the expedition, in front of the Mendoza bus terminal. Transfer from Mendoza to the high mountain area. The estimated travel time is 3:30 hours.

We meet in the morning in Mendoza City. We'll arrive at the mountain village of Las Cuevas at 3,200 meters. After settling into the shelter, we'll begin our practice sessions, returning in the afternoon with the last rays of the sun. Description of the area:

A vast ravine parallel to the international border winds its way through immense glaciers at over 4,000 meters. Magnificent rock formations of various colors. Hares, guanacos, foxes, and condors roam freely in the complete absence of humans. Lagoons and waterfalls hidden within the rock itself.

Day 2: Refuge / Summit / Refuge

After breakfast, we leave camp to begin our climb up the mountain ridge. The summit hike (round trip) takes between 9 and 13 hours, depending on the climbers' level of preparation and the snow conditions.

Once you reach the summit, the landscape is incomparable. You'll be able to see our starting point: National Route 7, the railroad tracks, Cerro México, Tolosa, Matienzo, Cerro Santa Elena, and the famous Christ the Redeemer.

From there, all that remains is to descend, enjoying the achievement.

Day 3: Refuge / Mendoza

In the morning, after breakfast, we'll begin preparing our gear and then return to Mendoza around 3:00 PM. End of services.

One Hundred Penitents

Mountaineering in the Andes mountain range

In front of Aconcagua Provincial Park

Cerro Penitentes, "the cathedral." Its rock formation, 4,356 meters high, resembles a church, and its smaller lower blocks appear to be monks in procession or penance. Its name comes from its formations, not because of the ice "penitents," like the pinnacles formed by the wind on the Aconcagua glaciers, but rather from its rocky figures: above, an enormous brown stone "construction," with vertical lines that allude to a monumental Gothic cathedral, and in front, lower, black boulders on a gentle green slope; menhirs grouped together like penitent monks approaching the cathedral. Rocks rising above the magnificent Andes mountain range resemble Capuchin monks in procession. In the early Church, penance became a lifeline for baptized sinners. The "order of penitents" maintained a long period of renunciation of the world, similar to that of the most austere monks. Depending on the region, penitents wore a special habit or shaved heads.

ITINERARY: 3 days / 2 nights

Day 1: Mendoza / Penitentes

Meeting and end of the expedition, YPF, in front of the bus terminal. At noon, we transfer from the city of Mendoza to the high mountain area; those who wish to travel by car are welcome. The estimated travel time is 3 hours.

The Vargas Gorge opens on the left bank of the Cuevas River, between the Los Penitentes ski resort and the town of Puente del Inca. It can be accessed from these two locations along National Route 7, 165 and 172 kilometers, respectively, from the city of Mendoza.

The Los Penitentes village is located at 2,600 meters above sea level at the foot of the ski resort, whose slopes do not run on the slopes of the hill of the same name but on Cruz de Caña.

We will walk approximately 6.5 km with 600 meters of elevation gain until we reach the Grajales refuge at 3,200 meters above sea level.

Day 2: Base Camp / Summit

After breakfast, we leave camp and head away from the stream, climbing a rocky and grassy slope, gaining altitude. As we climb higher and higher, the tents begin to look smaller, and the landscape and views open up. At some point, we'll see the majestic bulk of Aconcagua to the north, with its icy, imposing south face and its summit, often hidden in clouds.

The summit hike (round trip) takes between nine and twelve hours depending on the group's physical level and weather conditions.

Once we reach the summit, the landscape is incomparable. We can see our starting point from the previous day: National Route 7, the railroad tracks, the village of Los Penitentes, and the Banderita and Cruz de Caña mountains, and of course, in the background, always imposing, the highest peak: Aconcagua.

From there we begin the descent, loose, sharp rocks rolling and punishing our footwear. Kicking up dust, we descend and descend; a thousand meters of elevation gain and then some... Then the grass, the gentler slope, the carp, a snack, and a good dinner to replenish our strength!

Day 3: Base Camp / Cuevas River

After breakfast, we'll walk along the stream, take a short break, and continue to where our transfer will be waiting for us, toward the bus terminal, end of services.

Mountaineering in the Andes mountain range

Limite Mountain Range

For those who want to try mountaineering and explore part of the border mountain range, you can climb Pedro Zanni Mountain, 4,185 meters high. Without requiring specific climbing or high-altitude training, and just by being in good physical condition, you can reach the summit. From the summit, you have a wonderful view of the mountain range with the dominant image of Aconcagua (6,962 meters).

This trek and climb can be done year-round, but it's recommended to do so in the summer because accessibility conditions are more difficult in the winter. Entering the area in winter requires the use of snowshoes or cross-country skis and some experience. There is even an area exposed to potential avalanches from the ejection cones and lower slopes of Cerro Tolosa.

C° Horqueta

Mountaineering in southern Mendoza

The Andes Mountains will always hold unexplored, rarely visited, solitary corners, moving from every angle. In this case, the idea is to delve into the heart of the mountain range, ascending through the great Los Molles Valley, where this incredible mountain, 4,050 meters above sea level, in the southwest of the province of Mendoza, welcomes us. We will camp at the base of the mountain, then attempt the summit on the second day, but not before experiencing nature captivated by its slopes.

Horqueta Hill is located in the Molles Valley, a few kilometers before reaching the well-known Leñas Valley. This valley was where skiing began in the area. As you climb higher, you can enjoy impressive views of the mountain range, especially the appearance of Leñas Peak to the west, its pyramidal shape, and the dramatic cliff that drops from the summit.

Vallecitos - Mendoza

The Cordón del Plata is the high mountain "school" for Argentines in general. Just a short distance from Mendoza City (almost 100 km), we find, in these mountains, one of the few relatively "alpine" landscapes in the country. It combines altitude, truly high mountains, ice, and verticality. It's a midpoint between the great distances and desert-like gentleness of the high mountains of the Northwest and the concentrated, towering granite masses of Patagonia. Much could be written about the geological, historical, or romantic aspects of these beautiful mountains, where so many mountaineers of different generations have many memories, dreams, and first achievements. But let's get down to business from an Andean perspective. We will try to visit the summit of Mount Franke, 4,880 meters above sea level. Visible in part from the city of Mendoza and even more so from the towns in the east and the Uco Valley, from Guaymallén to San Carlos, the people of Mendoza are unaware of its secrets, and many mistake its white masses for Aconcagua or Tupungato. The Cordón del Plata belongs neither to the boundary mountain range or Principal Range, where Aconcagua is located, nor to the ancient Precordillera, but lies between the two, forming, along with the Cordillera del Tigre, the so-called Frontal Range. It is geologically the newest, and for this reason its mountains are the most slender in the Central Andes. Our program invites you to discover it and be captivated by its great shadows, attempting to reach several of its precious peaks.
