THE TRANSITION, A 7-day expedition in the Andean silence
Day 1 – How does the journey begin?
In Mendoza, I'll pick you up from your hotel or the airport. Then, we'll head to Potrerillos, where we'll share a delicious asado (barbecue)! It's the perfect way to get settled in and meet the group. We'll continue our journey to 2,600 meters, where the refuge where we'll be staying is located. Your body will start to feel the change in altitude.
Day 2 – What is the first objective?
We set off early for an acclimatization hike, which includes a portage to the Veguitas Superior camp (3,400 m). This is a key day for adapting, testing our pace, and adjusting our equipment. We then return to the refuge to rest.
Day 3 – How do we continue the climb?
Today we're going for our first goal: leaving the comfort of the refuge and venturing into the mountains. We'll start early from the refuge and gain altitude at a steady pace. Sharing the campsite and enjoying an incredible starry night will be our first reward. From here on out, our nights will be spent in tents.
Day 4 – What's the next step?
Without a doubt, today is a key day; this day will test us. After breaking camp and dividing the loads, we'll face a day that will take our breath away. Step by step, without rushing, we'll traverse and contemplate the mountain's transformation, leaving behind the green hues to enter a world of browns, grays, and whites with the arrival of snow. Having camp set up and enjoying the comfort of the tent will be a warm embrace on this cold day.
Day 5 – Shall we rest?
Yes, and it's strategic. Some take the opportunity to walk at a leisurely pace, others enjoy the view of the waterfall. It's a day to slow down, hydrate well, and mentally prepare for the big day.
Day 6 – What is the ascent to Cerro Vallecitos like?
Today we're going for our goal: 5,470 m. We started early from 4,200 m and gained altitude at a steady pace. The summit offers a breathtaking view. The descent is long, but your body feels completely different after that.
Day 7 – How does the expedition end?
We had breakfast, organized our gear, and began the return to the refuge. After showering, we continued down to the meeting point in Mendoza. The end of the hike was relaxed, allowing time to calmly descend and process everything we had experienced.

Do I need prior mountain or high-altitude experience to join this expedition?
For the Ascent Milestones, we recommend having some prior experience, as this will greatly enhance the experience. We recommend the Mountaineering Initiation Milestones.
What is the level of physical exertion and what preparation do you recommend?
The level of exertion is high; although we don't use our hands to climb, it is demanding. You don't need to be super fit, but we recommend exercising regularly 3 or 4 times a week. If you'd like to start this type of activity, contact us and we'll create a plan together. We also recommend a prior check-up with a doctor.
